The verse: And of the people is he who sells himself was revealed in favour of ‘Ali

أخبرنا أبو القاسم بن السمرقندي أنا عاصم بن الحسن أنا أبو عمر بن مهدي أنا أبو العباس بن عقدة نا الحسين بن عبد الرحمن بن محمد الأزدي نا أبي نا عبد النور بن عبد الله عن محمد بن المغيرة القرشي عن إبراهيم بن عبد الله بن معبد عن ابن عباس قال بات علي ليلة خرج رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم إلى المشركين على فراشه ليعمي على قريش و فيه نزلت هذه الآية وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْرِيْ نَفْسَهُ ابْتِغَاءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللَّهِ

Abu al Qasim ibn al Samarqandi informed us―’Asim ibn al Hassan informed us―Abu ‘Umar ibn Mahdi informed us―Abu al ‘Abbas ibn ‘Aqdah informed us―Hussain ibn ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Muhammad al Azdi narrated to us―my father narrated to us―’Abdul Nur ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us from―Muhammad ibn al Mughirah al Qurashi from―Ibrahim ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Ma’bad from―Ibn ‘Abbas who said:

‘Ali slept the night Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam went out to the mushrikin on his bed to hoodwink the Quraysh. It was in favour of him that the verse was revealed: And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allah.^[1]

The narration is da’if and munqati’. Abu Zaid did not meet Asma’ but he reports that she said … al Albani says, “This is the form of irsal.”^[2]

Another flaw of the narration is that al Dhahabi said the hadith is wrong since Asma’ was in Abyssinia on the night Fatimah radiya Llahu ‘anha got married.^[3]

Note: Al Albani says, “The shia ‘Abdul Hussain reports it and then falsely claims that al Dhahabi documented it in his Talkhis, accepting its authenticity.”^[4] But al Dhahabi’s falsification of the hadith passed. It is said: When you have no shame, then do as you please.
