‘Uthman sneezed three consecutive times in the presence of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam then said, “O ‘Uthman, should I not give you glad tidings?”
‘Uthman said, “Certainly O Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, may my parents be of sacrificed for you.”
The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Jibril recently informed me that Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala said, ‘An individual does not sneeze three consecutive times except faith is well rooted in his heart.’”[2]
The author notes that the purport of the narration is: If someone sneezes in this manner and is of the calibre of ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu in modesty and conviction.
[1] The purport of the statement is the narration was carried via Ijazah. See the Muqaddimah Ibn Salah pg. 96.
[2] The isnad is Matruk (suspected of forgery), due to the unreliability of Sulaiman ibn Salamah, ‘Amr ibn Jarir, and Ya’qub ibn al Jahm; they are all suspected of lying. Lisan al Mizan 3/111, 4/313, and 6/375. I could not find this narration in the published works of al Hakim, perhaps it is found in his lost work Tarikh Nisabur. What is indicative of this is the chain of the author, wherein he explained the geographical positioning of the district Bar. This could very much be al Hakim’s words under the biography of Hussain ibn Nasr in his Tarikh. And Allah knows best.
