  1. Abu al Hussain ‘Ali ibn al Shafi’i ibn Dawood al Faqih narrated to us—Abu Mansur Muhammad ibn al Hussain ibn al Haytham al Muqawwami narrated to us—Abu Talhah al Qasim ibn Abi al Mundhir al Khatib narrated to us—Abu al Hassan ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn Salamah ibn Bahr al Qattan narrated to us—Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Yazid ibn Majah narrated to us—Abu Marwan Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman narrated to us—my father, ‘Uthman ibn Khalid narrated to us—from ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Zinad—from al A’raj—from Abu Hurairah:

The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam met with ‘Uthman at the door of the Masjid and said, “O ‘Uthman, Jibril has told me that Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala married you to Umm Khulthum for a dowry like that of  Ruqayyah, provided you treat her as you treated Ruqayyah.”[1]

NEXT⇒ 6. The Prophet prohibiting ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu from taking off the garment that symbolizes his Caliphate towards the end of his life. As well as establishing the legitimacy of his reign.

[1] The isnad is Matruk (suspected of forgery). Ibn Majah reported it in his Sunan (110) from the chain of Abu Marwan Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman, but in the published Sunan he narrated from ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Zinad—from his father—from al A’raj; the author omitted “from his father”. The published version is more accurate, Allah wiling. This narration is reported by Imam Ahmed in Fada’il al Sahabah, (844), (858); Ibn Abi ‘Asim in al Ahad (pg. 591); Al Tabarani in Mujam al Kabir (15/5296); Al Ajuri in al Shari’ah (pg.520). All of them narrated from Abu Marwan from ‘Uthman ibn Khalid. ‘Uthman ibn Khalid is suspected of lying. Al Hakim and Abu Nuaim al Asbahani state, “He narrated from Malik and others forged narrations.” Tahdhib al Tahdhib, 3/59. There is a collaborating narration in Mustadrak al Hakim, (6860), narrated by Abu Hurairah radiya Llahu ‘anhu, but it is via ‘Abdullah ibn Salih al Misri—from Ibn Lahi’ah; who are both weak narrators.
