The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “‘Uthman will intercede on the Day of Judgement on behalf of people equal in number to that of Rabi’ah and Mudar.”[1]

[1] The isnad is Da’if but it is authentic as Mawquf (when a Tabi’i narrates directly from the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to Hassan al Basri. Al Qati’i narrates in Zawa’id Fada’il al Sahabah (866) from Muhammad ibn Ahmed al Burani with this chain. In this chain there is Muhammad ibn Yazid Abu Hisham al Rifa’i and Yahya ibn Yaman, who are both da’if. The narration is authentically attributed to Hassan but not to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam as stated in Kitab al Zuhd of Imam Ahmed who narrates from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amir ibn al ‘Adawi—from Hamad ibn Salamah—from Yunus ibn ‘Ubaid—from Hassan (al Basri) that the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “By the one who has my soul in his hand, people will be granted freedom from hell fire with the intercession of a man from my nation. With his intercession a number equal to that of Rabi’ah and Mudar will be saved.” Hassan said, “They thought this was either ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan or Uways al Qarni.” He also narrates it from al Hussain, who is Ibn Muhammad ibn Bihram— from Hammad ibn Salamah with this chain (2047).
