علماء أمتي أفضل من أنبياء بني إسرائيل
The ‘Ulama’ of my ummah are superior to the Prophets of Bani Isra’il.
The hadith does not appear with the word afdal (superior to) but rather:
علماء أمتي كأنبياء بني إسرائيل
The ‘Ulama’ of my ummah are like the Prophets of Bani Isra’il.
Nonetheless, it is mawdu’.[1]
Mulla ‘Ali Qari al Hanafi has stated, “It has absolutely no basis as al Dimyari, al Zarkashi, and al ‘Asqalani have ascertained.”[2]
Al Shawkani unequivocally declared it baseless.[3] Al Fatni concurred.[4]
Al Zarkashi said, “I am unaware of any basis for it.”[5] Al Dimyari and Ibn Hajar made similar comments. Al Sakhawi, al Suyuti, Mulla ‘Ali Qari, al Sahmudi, and al ‘Ajluni corroborated.[6] Some added, “It is not known from any reliable book.”
Al Munawi says, “The hadith is mutakallam fih.”[7]
The accurate statement of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is:
العلماء أمناء الرسل
The ‘Ulama’ are the authorised representatives of the Messengers.
Sheikh ‘Abdul Rahman al Hut al Bayruti declared it mawdu’ and baseless concurring with many of Huffaz. Despite this, many ‘Ulama’ insert it into their books observing negligence to the declaration of the Huffaz.[8]
