Mughith

Love is the most cherished emotion to man. True love cannot be explained, it can only be felt and experienced. Loving someone is marvellous and to be loved is precious. However, when love is not reciprocated, it is very painful and heart-breaking. Who better to ask about this, than one who experienced this first hand, Sayyidina Mughith radiya Llahu ‘anhu.

He was a slave of Abu Ahmed ibn Jahsh al Asadi.[1] His name appears in the six canonical works, owing to his marriage to the lovely Barirah radiya Llahu ‘anha, the slave of Sayyidah ‘Aisha radiya Llahu ‘anha.

After his wife secured her freedom, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam gave her the choice to live with her husband or to separate from him, and said to her, “If he has intercourse with you, then there is no choice for you.”[2] Sayyidah Barirah radiya Llahu ‘anha chose to separate. This left Sayyidina Mughith radiya Llahu ‘anhu devastated.

He followed her in the streets of Madinah, begging her to take him back, with his beard drenched in tears. Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said to Sayyidina ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhu, “O ‘Abbas ! Are you not astonished at the love of Mughith for Barirah and the hatred of Barirah for Mughith?”

Seeing his pitiable condition, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam interceded to Sayyidah Barirah radiya Llahu ‘anha, “Why do you not take him back?” reminding her of the fact that they share a child. She submitted, “O Messenger of Allah! Do you order me to do so?” “No,” Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam explained, “I only intercede for him.” She submitted that she does not have any need for him.[3]

May Allah be pleased with Sayyidina Mughith radiya Llahu ‘anhu and grant him loving spouses in Jannat.
