There are two responses to this:[2]
Al Dehlawi says:
هذه الأمور لم تقع برضاء عائشة و لا علمت بذلك حتى أنها لما علمت ما جرى في حق عثمان بن حنيف اعتذرت له و استرضته
These things did not occur with the approval of Aisha or her knowledge. When she learnt of how ‘Uthman ibn Hunayf was treated, she apologised to him and appeased him.[4]
Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam dispatched Sayyidina Khalid ibn al Walid radiya Llahu ‘anhu to the Banu Judhaymah. He invited them to Islam. They did not know how to say aslamna (we accept Islam), so they said saba’na[5] (lit. we apostatised). Hearing this, Sayyidina Khalid radiya Llahu ‘anhu began killing them and taking them captive. When the news of this was conveyed to Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, he raised his hands and submitted:
اللهم إني أبرأ إليك مما صنع خالد
O Allah, I declare my innocence before You from what Khalid has done.[6]
No one can say that Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam commanded Sayyidina Khalid radiya Llahu ‘anhu to do this. Similarly, we declare that Sayyidah Aisha radiya Llahu ‘anha did not order this. In fact, she commanded the very opposite.
[1] ‘Uthman ibn Hunayf ibn Wahib, Abu ‘Amr al Ansari al Awsi radiya Llahu ‘anhu. It is said that he participated in Badr. However, majority agree that the first battle he participated in was Uhud. Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu appointed him governor of Basrah prior to her arrival. Sayyidina Talhah and Zubair overpowered him. This turned out to be a very famous story in the whole incident of Jamal. He passed away in the khilafah of Sayyidina Muawiyah radiya Llahu ‘anhu. (al Isti’ab vol. 1 pg. 317; al Isabah vol. 4 pg. 449)
