In the name of Allah, the Exceedingly Compassionate, the Excessively Merciful.
Introduction
All praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Salutations and peace be upon the most honourable Messenger, his Ahlul Bayt, and all his Sahabah.
Indeed, the knowledge of the glorious Qur’an is the loftiest knowledge in value, the most sublime in importance, the greatest in reward, and the most honoured in mention.[i] Meticulousness in learning the Qur’an is praiseworthy, which ought to reach its apex in being able to understand it, as Allah’s pleasure lies in learning it, and it contains, for the knowledgeable, direction towards the road of reason—all of this for its seeker. The Book of Allah has no doubt and His revelation has no misgivings. The one who recites it is successful with plentiful treasure and splendid reward. No falsehood approaches it from before or behind. It is a revelation from the Wise, the Praiseworthy.[ii]
The first to understand the importance of the Glorious Qur’an in the life of a believer were the Ahlul Bayt and Sahabah of the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. They are truly the devotees of the Qur’an. Their competence and sufficiency were through the Glorious Qur’an. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala selected them to memorise, love, and believe in His book. The Qur’an descended into the crevices of their hearts. Their hearts opened to the Qur’an and they were content with the Most Compassionate’s admonition. When these verses penetrated their hearts and souls, it led them to Allah’s love and pleasure.
The Ahlul Bayt and Sahabah of the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam are those whom Allah selected to witness the stations, events, and battles of the Qur’an. The Qur’an would descend upon the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam while all are seeing it, recognising it, and witnessing it. They thus implemented the Qur’an practically. By the time the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam passed on, each of them was a Qur’an walking on the surface of the earth. This Ummah spent the night in the state of wakefulness and kept thirsty during the day engaged with the Book of Allah. They were recluses of the night and knights of the day, with Allah’s words and the Messenger’s salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam words.
When Allah loves a bondsman, He blesses him with the ability to tread their footsteps. The Sahabah of the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam did not pass away except leaving behind their like among the Tabi’un (Successors) and the guided leaders who love the Speech of the Lord of the worlds. The Sahabah and Ahlul Bayt of the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam passed away after the Qur’an dominated their hearts and shaped their moulds. They planted this Qur’an in their followers and those who followed their way with goodness.
The Sahabah and Ahlul Bayt radiya Llahu ‘anhum planted the speech of Allah in the hearts of the Tabi’un, both males and females, young and elderly, until the hearts of the Sahabah of the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam loved the Qur’an. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala joined two characteristics in the Sahabah concerning the Qur’an—which are very seldomly found in a human in the world: the characteristic of knowledge of the Qur’an and practicing upon it and publicly implementing it.
The Sahabah and Ahlul Bayt radiya Llahu ‘anhum were with the Qur’an, with their hearts—they kept awake at night with it. A verse would make them cry and provide them with happiness. They lived the promises, warnings, yearnings, and cautions. They were with the Qur’an in reality: they lived the Qur’an. When verses of Jannat were recited to them, their hearts leaped with yearning to the refreshment and relaxation. When one of them would recite the verses of Jannat, it was as if he is plucking its fruits, reclining on its couches, and gazing at its trees, fruits, and rivers. What a superior nation! When one of them would recite verses describing Jahannam and the wrath of the Allah, the Judge, he would be stunned as if the moaning of Jahannam is before his ears.
A nation that loved the Book of Allah sincerely. When they saw the Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam reminding them with it and advising them with it, they knew that it was the decisive word and it was critical, not a joke; needed for one to carry his anxieties and distresses and exchange with it his feelings, apprehensions, and sorrows. So, when you intend to observe the generation of the Glorious Qur’an in its most splendid image and most stunning garments, then look at this selected nation and read of the biographies of the Sahabah and Ahlul Bayt of the selected Messenger salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
When you read their biographies, you are unsure of whether to be more impressed by their knowledge of the Glorious Qur’an or their understanding of the Speech of al Rahman. When you read their life stories, you are unsure of whether to be more impressed by their practice on the Speech of Allah, their awareness of Allah’s rulings and laws, or their restraint from Allah’s limits and warnings. The biography perfumes you and the heart scents you. You find truthfulness which holds no lie and love with no scepticism.
This treatise is to present a sample of the Sahabah’s and Ahlul Bayt’s adherence to the Qur’an, verified through their conduct and tribulations, under the title: The Qur’an in the Life of the Ahlul Bayt and Sahabah.
It is proper to point out that in the selection of material for this book, the object was not to exhaust efforts in gathering all related material to the subject. In reality, this material ought to be gathered and discussed in separate treatises. Some of this has been accomplished, and all praise belongs to Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala.
I also alert to the fact that I have not included in this treatise the statements of the scholars about the Qur’an. Rather, it is purely the statements of the blessed group, the Ahlul Bayt and Sahabah, unless necessity dictated. Their speech contains light and independence from all else, Allah willing.
I beseech Allah to make the Qur’an the springtime of our hearts and to guide us to the straight path.
