Hadith 206
(Burayd ibn Asram said,) “I heard ‘Ali saying regarding the verse, ‘And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths [that] Allah will not resurrect one who dies.’[1] (‘Ali said,) ‘This verse was revealed regarding me.’”
Al ‘Uqayli narrates this hadith — Ahmed ibn Muhammad ibn Sa’id al Marwazi narrated to me — al Fadl ibn Sahl narrated to us — ‘Abdul ‘Aziz ibn Aban narrated to us — Shu’bah narrated to us — from Abu Jamrah who said, “I heard Burayd ibn Asram…”[2]
Al ‘Uqayli said, “This has no basis.”
‘Abdul ‘Aziz ibn Aban is matruk, in fact Ibn Ma’in said, “A wretched liar who fabricates hadith.”
Burayd ibn Asram is Majhul (unknown), even though Ibn Hibban has deemed him thiqah.
Al Suyuti and Ibn ‘Iraq both mention this hadith in their respective works on fabrications.[3]
[1] Surah al Nahl: 38.
[2] Al ‘Uqayli: al Du’afaʾ al Kabir, 1/157.
[3] Al Suyuti: al Ziyadat ‘ala al Mawdu’at, 1/280; Ibn ‘Iraq: Tanzih al Shari’ah, 1/405.
