Hadith 167

Concerning the verse, ‘Those who spend their wealth [in Allah’s way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly…’[1] he said, “It was revealed regarding ‘Ali. He had four dirhams; he spent one dirham at night, one dirham in the day, one secretly, and one publicly.”

‘Abdul Razzaq and others narrate this hadith — ‘Abdul Wahhab ibn Mujahid narrated to us — from his father — from Ibn ‘Abbas…[2]

‘Abdul Wahhab ibn Mujahid is matruk (suspected of forgery). Sufyan al Thawri deemed him a kadhdhab (liar).

Al Albani ruled the hadith a fabrication.[3]

Ibn Taymiyyah mentions several factors when explaining that the hadith is a lie.[4]
