‘Ali ibn Abi Talib killed ‘Amr ibn Wudd and entered the presence of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. When the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saw him, he and the Muslims made takbir (Allahu Akbar). The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “O Allah, grant ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib a virtue which You have never granted anyone before him nor after him.” Jibril ‘alayh al Salam descended and with him was a citron from Jannat. He said, “Verily Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala sends salam (greetings) and says to you, ‘Give this to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.’” He handed it over to him when suddenly it split into two halves. In it was white silk with the following two lines written in yellow (ink), “Greetings from al Talib al Ghalib to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.”
Ibn al Jawzi narrates this hadith — Ibrahim ibn Dinar al Faqih informed us — Abu ‘Ali ibn Nabhan informed us — al Hassan ibn al Hussain ibn Duma informed us — Ahmed ibn Nasr al Dhari’ informed us — Sadaqah ibn Musa narrated to us — Salamah ibn Shabib narrated to us — ‘Abdul Razzaq narrated to us — Ma’mar narrated to us — from al Zuhri — from ‘Urwah ibn al Zubair — from Ibn ‘Abbas…[1]
Ibn al Jawzi said, “There is no doubt that this hadith is a forgery. The person responsible for forging it is al Dhari’. Al Daraqutni said that he is a kadhdhab (liar) and a dajjal.”
Al Hassan ibn al Hussain ibn Duma was suspected by al Khatib for forging reports.
Muhammad ibn Sa’id ibn Nabhan is mukhtalit (commits serious errors).
Al Dhahabi, al Suyuti, and Ibn ‘Iraq all mention this hadith in their respective works on fabrications.[2]
