Hadith 137

خلقت أنا، وهارون بن عمران، ويحيى بن زكريا، وعلي بن أبي طالب، من طينة واحدة.

Harun ibn ‘Imran, Yahya ibn Zakariyya, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib and I were all created from the same clay.

Al Khatib narrates this hadith — Abu al Qasim ‘Ali ibn al Hassan ibn Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Uthman al Daqqaq informed me — Muhammad ibn Ismaʾil al Warraq narrated to us — Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn al Hussain ibn Dawood al Qattan narrated to us in the year 311 — Muhammad ibn Khalaf al Marwazi narrated to us — Musa ibn Ibrahim al Marwazi narrated to us — Musa ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad narrated to us — from his father — from his grandfather who said, “The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said…”[1]

This hadith is mawdu’ (fabricated).

Ibn al Jawzi states, “This hadith is a fabrication. The suspected person is al Marwazi. Yahya ibn Ma’in says he was a kadhdhab (liar). Al Daraqutni says he is matruk (suspected of forgery). Ibn Hibban says he was mughaffal (unmindful); hadith that were not his would be read to him and he would affirm that they are his narrations. Therefore, he deserves to be abandoned.”[2]

Al Dhahabi pinned the blame on someone else and al Suyuti and al Shawkani followed suit and agreed with him.[3]

Ibn Hajar explains the mistake committed by al Dhahabi and what is correct is that Musa ibn Ibrahim is the problem of the hadith, not Muhammad ibn Khalaf.[4] Ibn ‘Iraq mentions this (too).[5]
