Hadith 133

(Ibn ‘Abbas said) The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam took me by my hand and took ‘Ali by his hand. He read four raka’at of salah and then he raised his hands to the sky and said, “O Allah, Musa ibn ‘Imran asked You and verily Muhammad asked You to ‘expand my chest for me, make easy for me my affair, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they can understand my speech, and make for me a wazir (minister) from my family! Increase through ‘Ali my strength, and let him share my strength.” Ibn ‘Abbas said, “I heard a caller call out, ‘O Ahmed! You have been given what you have asked for.’ The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, ‘O Abu al Hassan, raise your hand to the sky and supplicate to your Lord; ask Him (and) He will give you.’ ‘Ali raised his hand to sky and said, ‘O Allah, grant me a promise with You and grant me affection with You.’ And so Allah revealed unto His Prophet (the verse), ‘Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.’[1] The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam recited the verse to his Companions and it amazed them very much. The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, ‘What amazes you? Verily the Qurʾan is four parts: one-fourth regarding us, the Ahlul Bayt specifically; one-fourth regarding our enemies; one-fourth regarding halal and haram; and one-fourth regarding inheritance and other (miscellaneous) rulings. By Allah, the most precious parts of the Qurʾan were revealed regarding ‘Ali.’”

This hadith is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas with the following two chains of transmission:

  1. Ibn al Maghazili narrates this hadith — Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Talhah ibn Ghassan ibn al Nu’man al Kazaruni informed us ijazatan (he authorized us to transmit this hadith) — ‘Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf narrated to them — Abu Ishaq al Madini narrated to us — Ahmed ibn Musa al Harami narrated to us — al Hussain ibn Thabit al Madani narrated to us—the servant of Musa ibn Jafar — my father narrated to me — from Shu’bah from al Hakam — from ‘Ikrimah — from Ibn ‘Abbas…[2]

This hadith is undoubtedly mawdu’ (fabricated). Everyone beneath Shu’bah could not be traced. Definitely one of them is responsible for forging this report. Perhaps al Hussain ibn Thabit al Madani is the same person whose biography is mention in al Jarh wa al Ta’dil.[3] Abu Hatim says, “He is majhul (unknown) and his father is similarly majhul.”[4]

Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak).

  1. Al Tha’labi narrates this version of the hadith with a chain of transmission that is saqit (wholly unreliable).[5]

Al Himmani is accused of sariqat al hadith[6] (appropriating hadith).

Qais’s son inserted hadith into his father’s collection that were not his.

‘Abbad is ‘Abayah ibn Rib’i. As mentioned previously, he is matruk (suspected of forgery).

Everyone else in the chain of transmission could not be traced.

Al Albani cites Ibn Hajar saying, “Al Tha’labi narrates a lengthy version of this hadith from Abu Dharr. The chain of transmission is saqit (wholly unreliable).”[7]

Al Albani ruled the hadith a fabrication even though he was unable to locate its chain of transmission. This is because the matn (text) is evidently munkar (unacceptable).

I was able to locate the chain of transmission and we are even surer that it is a fabrication. The chain of transmission is full of darkness.

In short the hadith is mawdu’ (fabricated) and a lie. It has a chain of transmission that is saqit (wholly unreliable).
