I heard Abu Hurairah requesting permission to speak when ‘Uthman was besieged.

He said, “I heard the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying, ‘There shall be civil strife and differences—or differences and civil strife,’

We said, ‘O Rasul of Allah, what do you command us to do?’

He said, ‘Stick with the trustworthy one and his companions.’

The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam pointed to ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan while saying this.[3]

NEXT⇒ 10. Ibn ‘Umar defending ‘Uthman from three accusations cast at him.

[1] He is Mughirah ibn Salamah al Makhzumi.

[2] Wahib ibn Khalid al ‘Ijlan al Basri.

[3] The chain of narration is weak. The author narrates from a lost portion of Ishaq ibn Rahuyah’s Musnad. The narrators are all reliable except Abu Habibah. No one considered him a reliable narrator besides al ‘Ijli and Ibn Hibban. Imam Ahmed in his Musnad (8531) and Ibn Shabbah in Tarikh al Madinah (1924) narrate from ‘Affan ibn Muslim from Wahib.
