وَبِهِ قَالَ ابْنُ مَاجَه: حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيْسَ، عَنْ هَشِامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيْرِيْنَ، عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ عُجْرَةَ، قَالَ: ذَكَرَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ فِتْنَةً فَقَرَّبَهَا، فَمَرَّ رَجُلٌ مُقَنَّعٌ رَأْسُهُ، فَقَالَ رَسُوْلُ الله : هَذَا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَى الهُدَى، فَوَثَبْتُ، فَأَخَذْتُ بِضِبْعَيْ عُثْمَانَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقْبَلْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ، فَقُلْتُ: هَذَا؟ قَالَ: هَذَا
- Ibn Majah states: ‘Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us—’Abdullah ibn Idris narrated to us—from Hisham ibn Hassan—from Muhammad ibn Sirin—from Ka’b ibn ‘Ujrah:
The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam foretold of civil strife that will be in the near future. A veiled man passed by and the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “On that day, this one will be on the right path.”
I jumped upon the man and grabbed ‘Uthman by his upper arm. I then faced the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and asked, “This one?”
The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “This one!”[1]
[1] This isnad is Da’if, but the narration itself is Sahih li Ghayrihi, i.e. due authentic due to corroborating reports. Ibn Majah narrates in his Sunan (111) from ‘Ali ibn Muhammad al Tanafisi and all the narrators are reliable except in the case of Muhammad ibn Sirin narrating it from Ka’b ibn ‘Ujrah as Mursal. This was mentioned by Ibn Abi Hatim—from his father in al Marasil (684). It has an alternate authentic chain of transmission recorded by Imam Ahmed in Fada’il al Sahabah (825) narrated by Ibrahim al Juzajani—from Hajjaj ibn Minhal—from Hammad ibn Salamah—from Sa’id al Jariri—from ‘Abdullah ibn Shaqiq ibn Hawalah. In this version there is the addition “On that day, he and whoever is with him are on the right path.” There is another collaboration narrated by Ka’b ibn Murrah or Murrah ibn Ka’b in al Musnad. Imam Ahmed narrates (18067) with an authentic chain from ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Mahdi—from Muawiyah ibn Salih al Hadarami—from Salim ibn ‘Amir—from Jubayr ibn Nufayr—from Ka’b ibn Murrah that the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Civil strife will sprout from under my feet—or under my legs—this one and whoever follows him will be safe from it.” Imam Ahmed (18068) as well as al Tirmidhi (3704) narrate with their chains of transmissions from Ayub al Sakhtiyani—from Abu Qilabah—from Abu al Ash’ath Shurahbil ibn Adah—from Ka’b ibn Murrah, that the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “This one and his companions are on the right path.” Al Tirmidhi commented, “This hadith is Hassan Sahih.”
