I asked ‘Ali regarding ‘Uthman and he said, “He is from those who believe then fear Allah and believe, and then fear Allah and do good He did not complete the verse.[2]
I heard ‘Ali saying, “The verse, “Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us,”[4] includes ‘Uthman.”[5]
[1] In the original it states “Ibn Abi ‘Awn” which is incorrect. The correct format is what was mentioned above and also stated in Fadaʾil al Sahabah. Abu ‘Awn’s full name is Muhammad ibn ‘Ubaidullah al Thaqafi, a reliable narrator whom the authors of the six canonical works besides Ibn Majah transmit from.
[2] The isnad is Sahih. Imam Ahmed narrates it in Fada’il al Sahabah (770) from Muhammad ibn Jafar Ghundar with this chain.
[3] The information between the brackets was absent in the original document. What we mentioned above is correct as stated in Fada’il al Sahabah.
[4] Surah al Ambiya’: 101.
[5] The Isnad is Sahih. Imam Ahmed records it in Fada’il al Sahabah (771) from Yahya ibn Sa’id al Qattan with this chain of narration. In transmitting from Shu’bah there seems to be differences. Yahya ibn Sa’id narrates as mentioned above, from Abu Bishr—from Yusuf ibn Sa’d. Abu Dawood al Tayalisi concurs with him as recorded in Sharh Mushkil al Athar (6117). Shababah ibn Sawwar differs with him; as recorded in the Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (32043), replacing Yusuf ibn Sa’d with Yusuf ibn Mahik. The correct one being the first, as it is clear from the narration of Ghundar recorded in the Tafsir of al Tabari (24830). He states, “From Abu Bishr—from Yusuf ibn Sa’d, and not Ibn Mahik.”
