When ‘Uthman was besieged Mughirah ibn Shu’bah entered upon him and said, “You see the situation you find yourself in and I am here to present to you three solutions: 1) If you wish, we will knock a hole on the side of the house and create a door other than the one they are at. You can then get your conveyance and enter Makkah. They will not violate the sanctity of the city while you are in there. 2) Or you head to the Levant, where you will meet up with its inhabitants and Muawiyah. 3) If you wish, you take those around you and fight them. You have the numbers and strength, you are on the right path and they are on falsehood.”
‘Uthman said, “As for your suggestion that I should head to Makkah, I heard the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying, ‘A man from Quraysh who will digress from the path [return after Hijrah] upon him is half the world’s punishment.” I will not be that person. As for going to the Levant, I will not abandon the land which I emigrated to and sojourned with the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in. As for your statement that I have the numbers and strength; I will not be the first person after the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to spill even a cupful of [Muslim] blood.”[1]
[1] The isnad is Da’if. Imam Ahmed narrates it in his Musnad (481) and al Bukhari in Tarikh al Kabir (1/164) from Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul Malik—from Mughirah. Al Bukhari has a separate biography for him and did not mention this narration. Ibn Abi Hatim in Jarh wa al Ta’dil (8/7) states, “Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul Malik from Mughirah is Mursal (did not meet who he is narrating from). Ya’qub ibn Shaibah differs with him as mentioned in Tarikh Dimashq (29/394), due to it being established that he heard from Ibn ‘Umar according to him. I say: Using this in establishing his having heard from Mughirah is sceptical. There is more than twenty years between their deaths. And Allah knows best. However, we have four authentic narrations from Awza’i—from Muhammad ibn ‘Abdul Malik reporting from other then Mughirah ibn Shu’bah. Check: Musnad ibn Mubarak (pg. 151), Tarikh Madinah of Ibn Shabbah (2/246), and Al Shari’ah of al Ajuri (1484). The preponderant opinion is the narration is Mursal.
