وَبِهِ قَالَ السَّمْعَانِيُّ: أَخْبَرَنَا [مُحَمَّدُ] بْنُ عَلِيٍّ التَّاجِرُ، أَخْبَرَنَا جَدِّي، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الحُسَيْنِ الحَاكِمُ، أَخْبَرَنَا الحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ هَاشِمُ بْنُ القَاسِمِ، أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْهُمْ – إِنَّهُ كَانَ يَعْنِي: عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ – كُلَّمَا دَعَا رَجُلًا مِنْهُم – يَعْنِي: مِنْ أَهْلِ الشُّوْرَى – تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ، ذَكَرَ مَنَاقِبَهُمْ، قَالَ: إِنَّكَ لَهَا أَهْلٌ، فَإِنْ أَخْطَأتُكَ فَمَنْ؟ قَالَ: فَيَقُوْلُ: إِنْ أَخْطَأتَنِي فَعُثْمَان
Every time he called one of them—from the men of Shura’ (consultative committee)—that night, he mentioned their virtues. He said, “Verily you are suitable for the position, if I was not to appoint you then who do you recommend?”
They all said, “If you do not appoint me, then ‘Uthman should be appointed.”[2]
[1] In the original is states “Ahmed” instead of Muhammad. The latter is correct and the first is a mistake. His full name is Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Mahmud al Kara’i al Zulahi who narrates from his grandfather, Ahmed ibn ‘Ali al Kara’i. Siyar A’lam al Nubala’ (1/855).
[2] Harith narrates it in his Musnad as mentioned in Bughyat al Bahith (596) by al Haythami, from Abu al Nadar Hashim ibn al Qasim. The isnad is Sahih until Usamah ibn Zaid al Laythi, who did not meet ‘Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Auf, thus rendering the narration Mursal.
