أَنْبَأَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي الفَتْحِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ المَرْوَزِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي [المُظَفَّرِ] السَّمْعَانِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الوَاحِدِ بْنِ فَاذْشَاه، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْم أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ بُنْدَارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ أُسَيْدٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ سِنَانٍ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ مَهْدِيٍّ يَقُوْلُ: كَانَ لِعُثْمَانَ شَيْئَانِ لَيْسَا لِأَبِيْ بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ، صَبْرُهُ نَفْسُهُ حَتَّى  قُتِلَ مَظْلُوْمًا، وَجَمْعُهُ النَّاسَ عَلَى المُصْحَف

Muhammad ibn Abi al Fath ibn ‘Abdul Rahman al Marwazi[1] narrated to us—Abu Bakr ibn Abi [al Muzaffar] al Sam’ani[2] narrated to us—Abu Tahir ‘Ali ibn ‘Abdul Wahid Fadhshah narrated to us—Abu Nuaim Ahmed ibn ‘Abdullah narrated to us—Ahmed ibn Bundar narrated to us—’Abdullah ibn Ahmed ibn Usayd narrated to us saying—I heard Ahmed ibn Sinan saying—I heard ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Mahdi saying:

‘Uthman had two things which Abu Bakr and ‘Umar did not have: His patience until he was murdered unjustly and uniting the Ummah on one Mushaf (copy of the Qur’an).[3]

[1] The original has ‘Abdul Rahman from al Marwazi, which is incorrect. What we mentioned is correct as will be mentioned in the following narrations.

[3] The isnad is Sahih. Abu Nuaim narrates it in his Hilyah from Ahmed ibn Bundar. Ahmed Bundar is also known as Abu ‘Abdullah al Shi’ar who passed on the year 359 A.H. He was a reliable narrator. Abu Nuaim recorded a biography of him in Akhbar Asbahan (151). ‘Abdullah ibn Ahmed ibn Usayd is a great scholar of Hadith who passed in the year 310 A.H. Tabaqat al Muhaddithin bi Asbahan (477).
