Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq narrated to us―Muhammad ibn Ayub narrated to us―Shayban ibn Farrukh informed―Talhah ibn Zaid narrated to us from―’Ubaid in Hassan from―’Ata’ al Kikharani from―Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah radiya Llahu ‘anhuma who reports:
Once, while we were in a grass house in the midst of a group of Muhajirin among whom were Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, ‘Ali, Talhah, Zubair, ‘Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Awf, and Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas radiya Llahu ‘anhum, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Every man from amongst you should stand up to his equal. The Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam stood up to ‘Uthman and embraced him saying, ‘You are my helper in the world and the Hereafter.’”
Al Hakim narrated it saying, “This hadith has a sahih isnad but they have not recorded it.” However, al Dhahabi challenges him by asserting, “Instead, it is da’if. Talhah ibn Zaid appears therein and he is wahin (weak) who narrated from ‘Ubaid in Hassan who is Shuwaykh Muqill (lit. old man who narrates little).”
Hafiz Ibn Hajar al ‘Asqalani states, “Al Hakim reported it in al Mustadrak and classified it as sahih. He overlooked the weakness of Talhah ibn Zaid who is matruk (suspected of forgery).”[1]
Talhah ibn Zaid
The Shia insist that the meaning of wali is Imam. But is it possible for Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to tell Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu:
أنت وليي في الدنيا و الآخرة
You are my Imam in the world and Hereafter.
I have found that Ibn al Jawzi[3], al Shawkani[4] and al Suyuti[5] have classified it as mawdu’.
The narration is in relation to the virtues of Sayyidina ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu and has nothing to do with Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu.
As I said previously, the hadith is proof against the Shia since wilayah here refers to perfect love, not Imamah since it cannot mean: you are my imam in the world and the Hereafter.
