What do you want with ‘Ali

‘Affan narrated to us saying―Jafar ibn Sulaiman narrated to us saying―Yazid al Rishk narrated to me from―Mutarrif from―’Imran ibn Hussain who reports:

Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam dispatched an expedition and appointed ‘Ali as their leader. ‘Ali did something they disapproved of. So four of the companions of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam decided that they will inform him. Whenever they would return from a journey, they would begin by Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. They would greet him and look at him and then return to their homes. When the expedition returned, they greeted Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam with salam. One of the four stood up and said, “O Messenger of Allah, do you not know that ‘Ali did such and such.”

Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam turned to him―and anger was apparent on his face―and shouted, “What do you want with ‘Ali? What do you want with ‘Ali? ‘Ali is from me and I am from ‘Ali.”

The hadith is sahih.[1] The rafidi labels it the hadith of complaint.

The hadith emphasises the prohibition of hating Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu and encourages loving him. It also expresses his rank and proximity in the sight of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. It has absolutely no connection with Imamah, not from any angle.

Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala declares:

And Allah is the ally of the believers.[2]
