Theme Seven
Two virtues of Sheikhayn radiya Llahu ‘anhuma will be included in this theme which are reported by Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu. The first is that Sayyidina Abu Bakr and Sayyidina ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma will enter Jannat before the entire Ummah. Have a look at the following narration:
عن عبد خير صاحب لواء علي رضي الله عنه عن علي قال إن أول من يدخل الجنة من هذه الأمة أبو بكر و عمر قال فقال رجل يا أمير المؤمنين يدخلانها قبلك قال إي والذي خلق الحبة و برأ النسمة ليدخلانها قبلي
‘Abd Khair, the flag bearer of Sayyidina ‘Ali, reports that he said:
“The first to enter Jannat from this Ummah will be Abu Bakr and ‘Umar.”
A man enquired, “O Amir al Mu’minin, will they enter before you?”
“By the oath of the Being who created the seed and the soul,” he replied, “they will definitely enter it before me.”[1]
The second virtue is that these two eminent men will be the leaders of the middle-aged class in Jannat. This has been transmitted by Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu from Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Kindly peruse the following transmission:
عن علي بن الحسين عن علي بن أبي طالب قال كنت مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم إذ طلع أبو بكر و عمر فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم هذان سيدا كهول أهل الجنة من الأولين و الآخرين إلا النبيين و المرسلين يا علي لا تخبرهما
‘Ali ibn al Hussain reports from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib:
I was with Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam when suddenly Abu Bakr and ‘Umar approached. So, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam declared, “These two are the leaders of the middle-aged of Jannat from the former and later generations, besides the Prophets and Messengers. O ‘Ali, do not inform them.”[2]
The following ‘Ulama’ have transmitted this marfu’ (a hadith attributed to Nabi salla Llahu `alayhi wa sallam) narration of Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu through their respective sanads. We will suffice on presenting the references for purposes of brevity. The scholars may refer to the sources themselves. More detail has appeared in the fourth chapter of the Siddiqi section.
- Musnad Ahmed, vol. 1 pg. 80; musnadat ‘Ali (Hassan from ‘Ali)
- Sunan ibn Majah, pg. 10, chapter on the virtue of Abu Bakr rahimahu Llah (Harith from ‘Ali)
- Kitab al Kuna, vol. 2 pg. 99, chapter ‘ayn (from Zirr from ‘Ali)
- Musnad Abi Ya’la, vol. 1 pg. 17, musnadat of ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu, Qilmi print, Dargah Sharif, Pirguth, Sindh (al Sha’bi from ‘Ali)
We learn from the above that
Sayyidina Abu Bakr and Sayyidina ‘Umar will be the leaders of the dwellers of Jannat besides the Messengers and their entry will be before all others. These are the reports of Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu. Truth and justice demands that they be appreciated and accepted wholeheartedly.
