The praise of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhu

We see ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma defending ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu in his absence when somebody spoke ill of him as is narrated in Sahih al Bukhari:

A person came to Ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma and asked about ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu. He mentioned the traits of ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu and thereafter said, “It seems like you did not like what I said.”

The person said, “Yes.”

‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu said. “May Allah afflict you with problems.”

Thereafter this person asked him about ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu. So he mentioned the traits of ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu.

The person replied, “Yes, he was exactly as you mention. His house was between the houses of the Rasul of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”

Thereafter Ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma said, “It seems like you did not like what I said.”

He said, “Yes.”

Ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma said. “May Allah afflict you with problems.”[1]

His praise for Hussain ibn ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhuma has been narrated from Ibn Abi Ni’am in Sahih al Bukhari:

Once I was with ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma and a person asked him about the law regarding the blood of a mosquito.

Ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma asked him, “Where are you from?”

He replied, “I am From Iraq.”

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma then said, “Look at him, he is asking about the blood of a mosquito where as they are the ones who have killed the grandson of the Rasul of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. I heard the Rasul of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying, ‘These are my two fragrant flowers in this world.’”[2]

The great relationship which ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma enjoyed with ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar ibn Abi Talib radiya Llahu ‘anhu has been recorded in Tarikh Dimashq of Ibn ‘Asakir. It is narrated:

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar used to go to ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar. So the people told him, “You seem to go a lot to ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar.”

Ibn ‘Umar told them, “If you would have seen his father then you have loved him too. His father was martyred and more than 70 wounds were found on his body as the result of strikes by swords and spears.”[3]

In Sahih al Bukhari it is narrated from Sha’bi that:

When Ibn ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma used to greet Ibn Jafar he used to say, “Al Salam ‘Alayk (Peace be upon you), O son of the person with two wings.”[4]
