The drinker of wine is like the idol worshipper.
There is difference of opinion with regards to it being classified sahih or da’if. A group of ‘Ulama’ labelled it da’if while al Albani classified it sahih in Sahih Ibn Majah.
Muhammad ibn Sulaiman
- Al Nasa’i and Ibn ‘Adi labelled him da’i
- Ibn Hibban classified him as qawi (reliable). Ibn Hibban is mutasahil in tawthi[1]
- Al Dhahabi criticised the isna[2]
- Ibn ‘Adi commented, “Muhammad ibn Sulaiman ibn al Asbahani is mudtarib al hadi”[3]
- Ibn al Jawzi classified him da’i[4]
The Khawarij substantiate their doctrine of affirming the kufr of one who commits a major sin by quoting such ahadith.
It is narrated from many chains.
Yunus ibn Khabbab
- Al Daraqutni listed him in al ‘Ilal saying, “An evil man. He was an extremist Shia.”
- Abu Dawood remarked, “Blasphemer of the Sahabah of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”
- Yahya ibn Ma’in made a similar remark.[5]
Fitr ibn Khalifah
- He is mutakallam fih (debatable/accused).
Junadah ibn Marwan
- Ibn Abi Hatim said, “‘Abdul Rahman narrated to us saying that he asked his father about him who said, ‘He is not qawi (reliable). I fear that he be a kadha’”[6]
