Many people may not know that the Ahlus Sunnah in Iran form 20% of the total population and that they might be even more, since Iranian authorities conceal their actual numbers. Furthermore, they live in backward regions and some of them hide the actual number of children they have for fear of mandatory conscription. In reality, therefore, their numbers are much more than the official figure. There are regions that are exclusively inhabited by Sunnis, like Kurdistan (in the west) and Baluchistan (in the south-east) and most of the region in the south coast. They have a noticeable presence in cities like Tehran, Mashhad and Isfahan as well. This list is merely an approximation and is by no means exhaustive.
The number of Sunnis in Iran reaches 10 million. They are spread over the frontier regions, but some of them live in the larger metropolitan cities like Tehran, Shiraz and Mashhad. The percentage they form of the total population of Iran is therefore 20%.
