Section Four

The Statements of Imam Jafar al Sadiq

This section will contain the statements of Imam Jafar al Sadiq rahimahu Llah in favour of Sayyidina Abu Bakr and Sayyidina ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma, their virtue and honour. This has been discussed in great detail in the fifth chapter of the Siddiqi section and will be reproduced here briefly.

1. Those who do not Befriend Abu Bakr and ‘Umar will Not Receive Rasulullah’s salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam Intercession

عن سالم بن أبي حفصة قال قال جعفر بن محمد رضي الله عنه أبو بكر جدي أفيسب الرجل جده لا نالتني شفاعة محمد إن لم أكن أتولاهما و أبرأ من عدوهما

Salim ibn Abi Hafsah reports that Jafar ibn Muhammad rahimahu Llah said:

Abu Bakr is my grandfather. Does anyone swear at his grandfather? May I not receive Muhammad’s intercession if I do not befriend them and dissociate from their enemies.[1]

2. Abu Bakr and ‘Umar were just leaders and steadfast on the truth, and Allah’s mercy upon them on the Day of Qiyamah

فقال يا ابن رسول الله ما تقول في حق أبي بكر و عمر فقال عليه السلام هما إمامان عادلان قاسطان كانا على الحق و ماتا عليه فعليهما رحمة الله يوم القيامة

He asked, “O son of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam! What do you say about Abu Bakr and ‘Umar?”

He replied, “They were just and fair leaders. They remained upon the truth and died upon the same. May Allah’s mercy be upon them on the Day of Qiyamah.”[2]

3. Jafar befriended Abu Bakr and ‘Umar and greeted them with the masnun salam at their graves

و المروي عن جعفر بن محمد أنه كان يتولاهما و يأتي القبر فيسلم عليهما مع تسليمه على رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم

It is reported that Jafar ibn Muhammad befriended them and would approach the grave and greet them when he greeted Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.[3]

The scholars should also be notified that the author of al Shafi Sayed Murtada ‘Alam al Huda could not come up with any sensible answer to this. At the end, he was constrained to present the ancient solution of Taqiyyah.
