Sayyidina Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan

The scribe of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and his brother-in-law, the brother of his wife Umm al Mu’minin Umm Habibah radiya Llahu ‘anha.

Lineage

He is Muawiyah, the son of Abu Sufyan (Sakhr), the son of Harb, the son of Umayyah, the son of ‘Abdul Shams, the son of ‘Abd Manaf, the son of Qusayy.

His ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at the third generation, ‘Abd Manaf, and similarly it meets with that of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib ibn Hashim ibn ‘Abd Manaf.

His mother is Hind, daughter of ‘Utbah, the son of Rabi’ah, the son of ‘Abdul Shams, the son of ‘Abd Manaf. Thus her ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at ‘Abd Manaf as well. She shares a close ancestry with the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, having only three fathers between them and their common grandfather, ‘Abd Manaf.

The mother of Hind was Safiyyah, the daughter of Umayyah, the son Harithah, the son of al Awqas al Sulamiyyah.

The mother of Safiyyah was Aminah, the daughter of Nawfal, the son of ‘Abd Manaf; whose ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at ‘Abd Manaf.

The mother of Aminah was Qilabah, the daughter of Jabir, the son of Nasr, the son of Malik, the son of Hisl, the son of ‘Amir, the son of Lu’ayy; whose ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at Lu’ayy.

The mother of Qilabah was Tumadir, the daughter of al Harith, the son of Hubayb, the son of Judhaymah, the son of Malik, the son of Hisl, the son of ‘Amir, the son of Lu’ayy; whose ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at Lu’ayy.

The mother of Tumadir was Samma’, the daughter of Sa’id, the son of Sahm, the son of ‘Amr, the son of Husays, the son of Ka’b, the son of Lu’ayy; whose ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at Ka’b.

The mother of Samma’ was ‘Atikah, the daughter of Abdul ‘Uzza, the son of Qusayy; whose ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at Qusayy.

The mother of ‘Atikah was Huzayya, i.e. Raytah, the daughter of Ka’b, the son of Sa’d, the son of Taym, the son of Murrah; whose ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at Murrah.

The mother of Raytah was Qaylah, the daughter of Hudhafah, the son of Jamh, the son of ‘Amr, the son of Husays, the son of Ka’b, the son of Lu’ayy; whose ancestry meets with that of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at Ka’b.

This is all I could gather regarding the ancestry of Sayyidina Muawiyah radiya Llahu ‘anhu and his mother Hind bint ‘Utbah radiya Llahu ‘anha, a Sahabiyyah who pledged her allegiance to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and remained a true Muslim thereafter.

No other Companion has such strong familial links to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam as that of Hind radiya Llahu ‘anha, thus her ancestry cannot be ridiculed or insulted in any way as it is shared by the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.[1]

Eminent Personalities Of The Ahlul Bayt Who Had The Name Muawiyah

1. Muawiyah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar ibn Abi Talib

‘Abdullah ibn Jafar, the nephew of Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu and his son-in-law, named one of his sons Muawiyah.

The line of Muawiyah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar continued.

  • Al Baladhuri: Ansab al Ashraf (pg. 60-68)
  • Ibn ‘Inabah:Umdat al Talib (page 37).
  • Mus’ab al Zubairi: Nasab Quraysh (pg. 83)
  • Ibn Hazm al Andalusi: Jamharah Ansab al Arab ( 230)

Ibn ‘Inabah writes:

Our Sheikh, Abu al Hassan al ‘Umari said: ‘Abdullah (ibn Jafar) passed away during the caliphate of ‘Abdul Malik ibn Marwan at the age of 90. He had 20 sons, and some have said 24; among them was Muawiyah ibn ‘Abdullah who was the trustee of his estate. He had named him Muawiyah because Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan had requested him too, and gifted him one hundred thousand dirhams, or it has been said that it was a million dirhams… Muawiyah had Muhammad, Yazid, ‘Ali, and Salih…

Mus’ab al Zubairi writes:

The line of ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar continued through ‘Ali, Muawiyah, Ishaq, and Ismail…

Ibn Hazm writes in detail about the progeny of Sayyidina Jafar ibn Abi Talib radiya Llahu ‘anhu:

These are the children of Jafar ibn Abi Talib: ‘Abdullah, Muhammad, ‘Awn—whose mother was Asma’ bint ‘Umays. ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar had ‘Ali, Muawiyah, Ismail, Ishaq, Muhammad, ‘Awn al Akbar, ‘Awn al Asghar, Hussain, Jafar, ‘Ayyad, Abu Bakr, ‘Ubaidullah, Yahya, Salih, Musa, Harun, Yazid… Muawiyah ibn Abdullah ibn Jafar had… Salih ibn Muawiyah ibn Yazid bin Muawiyah… Yazid ibn Muawiyah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar ibn Abi Talib had Khalid ibn Yazid…

[1] Those ignorant with the science of genealogy and its distinction claim that Hind bint ‘Utbah was a “loose women” during the days of ignorance, along with a number of other demeaning statements which the heart cannot bear to write. The books Mathalib al ‘Arab of Ibn al Kalbi as well as Zahr al Rabi’, and other similar books are filled with such vile statements. She is among the brave female Companions whose biography can be read in al Isabah, #12505; al Isti’ab, #3569; Usd al Ghabah, #7350, and for further detail the treatise ‘Aqilah Quraysh Hind bint ‘Utbah. I hope Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala will grant me the ability to write a booklet on the ancestry of Muawiyah and his mother Hind radiya Llahu ‘anhuma and refute the allegations cast against them.
