Musa asked His Rabb to purify his Masjid with Harun

Hatim ibn al Layth narrated to us―’Ubaidullah ibn Musa narrated to us―Abu Maimunah narrated to us from―’Isa al Mala’i from―’Ali ibn al Hussain from―his father from―’Ali ibn Abi Talib who reports:

Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam grabbed my hand and said, “Musa asked His Rabb to purify his Masjid with Harun. And I asked my Rabb to purify my Masjid with you and your progeny.”

He then sent a message to Abu Bakr to shut his door. Abu Bakr recited, “We belong to Allah and to Him will we return,”’ and submitted, “We hear and we obey.” He complied and closed his door. Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam then sent a similar message to ‘Umar and ‘Abbas. Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam then said, “I did not close your doors and open ‘Ali’s. Rather Allah opened ‘Ali’s door and closed yours.”

This narration is mawdu’ (fabricated). Al Bazzar narrated it. Al Suyuti included it among all the mawdu’ ahadith.[1]

Al Haythami reported it from another chain from Sayyidina Ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhuma and said, “There is a group therein who are disputed.” Probably he is indicating to the rafidi Hussain al Ashqar. With regards to the narration of al Bazzar he commented, “His narrators are reliable.”[2]

This is another blunder of his. Al Bazzar himself says, “Abu Maimunah is majhul and ‘Isa al Mala’i; I do not know any narration of his except this one.”[3]

‘Isa al Malai

  • Hafiz al Dhahabi and Hafiz Ibn Hajar commented, “Abu al Fath al Azdi said, ‘They have suspected him of forgery.’”[4]
