رأيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كحل عين علي رضي الله عنه بريقه.
I saw the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam applying kuhl (antimony) to the eye of ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu with his saliva.
This hadith is narrated by al Tabarani, Ibn ‘Adi, Ibn al Maghazili, and Abu Nuaim from al Ma’alla ibn ‘Irfan — from Abu Waʾil — from ‘Abdullah.[1]
This hadith is munkar (unacceptable).
Al Ma’alla ibn ‘Irfan is one of the ghulat (extremists) and matruk (suspected of forgery). Ibn Hibban accused him of lying.[2]
Al Haythami says, “Al Tabarani narrates this hadith and it contains the narrator al Ma’alla ibn ‘Irfan. He is matruk (suspected of forgery).”[3]
