Hadith 98
علي يوم القيامة على الحوض، لا يدخل الجنة إلا من جاء بجواز من علي بن أبي طالب.
‘Ali will be by the Hawd (Pond); no one will enter Jannat except with permission from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib radiya Llahu ‘anhu.
Ibn al Maghazili narrates this hadith — Abu Muhammad al Hassan ibn Ahmed ibn Musa al Ghandajani informed us — Abu al Fath Hilal ibn Muhammad al Haffar informed us — Abu al Qasim Ismail ibn ‘Ali ibn Razin ibn ‘Uthman ibn ‘Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Ubaidullah ibn Yazid ibn Warqaʾ al Khuza’i — ‘Ali ibn al Hussain al Sa’idi narrated to us — Ismail ibn Musa al Suddi narrated to us — Ibn Fudayl narrated to us — Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad narrated to us — from Mujahid — from Ibn ‘Abbas who said, “The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said…”[1]
Al Dhahabi says, “Ismail ibn ‘Ali al Khuza’i is the teacher of Hilal al Haffar. Al Khatib says he is not a thiqah (reliable). (Al Dhahabi says) He is accused of lying; he brings forth strange reports.”[2]
I could not trace ‘Ali ibn al Hussain al Sa’idi.
As mentioned previously, Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak).
Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad is da’if (weak). He is also a mudallis[3] (obfuscates when he narrates) and a mukhtalit (commits serious errors).
Therefore, the hadith is mawdu’ (fabricated). Perhaps the aforementioned al Khuza’i is responsible for fabricating it.
This hadith also appears with the following wording:
Ibn al Maghazili narrates — al Qadi Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Ismail al ‘Alawi informed us — Abu Muhammad ibn al Saqqaʾ informed us — I read to Muhammad ibn al Hussain and he was listening — Ismail ibn Musa al Suddi narrated to you — Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us — from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad — from Mujahid — from Ibn ‘Abbas who said that the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will order Jibril to sit at the door of Jannat. No one will enter it except for he who has permission from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib radiya Llahu ‘anhu.”[4]
This hadith is munkar (unacceptable), batil (false), and mawdu’ (fabricated). Perhaps the problem in the hadith is the aforementioned al ‘Alawi.
Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak).
Al Dhahabi mentions his teacher, al ‘Alawi; however, he does not mention anything regarding his status as a narrator.[5]
Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad is da’if (weak). He is also a mudallis (obfuscates when he narrates) and a mukhtalit (commits serious errors).
