يا علي لا يبالي من مات وهو يبغضك مات يهوديا أو نصرانيا.
O ‘Ali, the person who dies having hatred for you is of no concern, for he has died the death of a Jew or a Christian.
This hadith is narrated from Bahz ibn Hakim, from his father, from his grandfather. It is narrated with the following two chains of transmission:
Yazid ibn Zuray’ said, “I said to Bahz ibn Hakim, ‘Did your father narrate to you? And him, from your grandfather, from the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam?’ He said, ‘(By) Allah! My father narrated to me, from my grandfather; if not, may Allah make my ears deaf with a cork from the fire (of Jahannam).’”
I could not trace Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Hashim al Mawsili, Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad al Muʾaddib, and Muhammad ibn al Harith al Misri. There is no doubt that one of these people fabricated this hadith.
As mentioned previously, Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak).
Ibn Taymiyyah ruled the hadith to be a fabrication.[2]
Al Daylami also narrated this hadith (as quoted by al Suyuti).[3]
It contains the narrator Ahmed ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Yazid al Muʾaddib. He fabricates hadith.
It also contains other unknown narrators.
‘Ali ibn Qarin and al Jarud are kadhdhabs (liars).
Ibn al Jawzi says, “This hadith is mawdu’ (fabricated). ‘Ali ibn Qarin is the suspect.”[5]
Both Ibn ‘Iraq and al Shawkani followed held similar views.[6]
The correct view is as they have said.
[1] Ibn al Maghazili: Manaqib ‘Ali, hadith no. 74.
[2] Ibn Taymiyyah: Minhaj al Sunnah al Nabawiyyah, 7/403.
[3] Al Suyuti: al Laʾali al Masnu’ah, 1/335.
[4] Al ‘Uqayli: al Du’afaʾ al Kabir, 3/250.
[5] Ibn al Jawzi: Kitab al Mawdu’at, 1/385.
[6] Ibn ‘Iraq: Tanzih al Shari’ah, 1/360; al Shawkani: al Fawaʾid al Majmu’ah, hadith no. 325.
