كنت عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فرأى عليا مقبلا، فقال: أنا وهذا حجة على أمتي يوم القيامة.
I was with the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and he saw ‘Ali approaching. He said, “This person (i.e. ‘Ali) and I will be a proof against my Ummah on the Day of Resurrection.”
Al Khatib and others narrate — from ‘Ubaidullah ibn Musa — Matr ibn Abi Matr narrated to me — from Anas ibn Malik…[1]
This chain of transmission contains the narrator ‘Ali ibn al Muthanna al Tuhawi; Ibn Hibban is the only one to deem him a thiqah (reliable). He is notorious for regarding majahil (unknown narrators) as thiqat (reliable).
Ibn ‘Adi pointed out towards the hadith being da’if (weak).
Matr ibn Maymun al Iskaf is matruk (suspected of forgery). In fact, Ibn Hibban and others have accused him of lying.
Ibn al Jawzi says this hadith is mawdu’ (fabricated) and that the accused person in its chain of transmission is Matr.[2]
Al Dhahabi, Ibn ‘Iraq, al Shawkani and al Albani have echoed similar sentiments.[3]
Al Dhahabi says this hadith is batil (false).[4]
Ibn ‘Asakir narrates this hadith from Ahmed ibn Khaytham — ‘Ubaidullah ibn Musa narrated to us — from ‘Ataʾ ibn Maymun — from Anas who said, “The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, ‘‘Ali and I will be a proof of Allah against His servants.’”[5]
I believe the name of ‘Ataʾ ibn Maymun is a mistake; it is supposed to be Matr ibn Maymun. He is famous for this hadith.
I could not trace Ahmed ibn Khaytham.
