Hadith 52

علي أصلي، وجعفر فرعي، أو: جعفر أصلي، وعلي فرعي.

‘Ali is my asl (foundation) and Jafar is my far’ (branch).” Or he said: “Jafar is my asl (foundation) and ‘Ali is my far’ (branch).

Al Tabarani and others narrate — from Muhammad ibn Ismail ibn Jafar ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar ibn Abi Talib — my uncle, Musa ibn Jafar narrated to us — from Salih ibn Muawiyah — from his brother, ‘Abdullah ibn Muawiyah — from his father — from ‘Abdullah ibn Jafar who said, “The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said…”[1]

The chain of transmission of al Diyaʾs al Mukhtarah is missing (the part of the chain that says) “…from his brother ‘Abdullah ibn Muawiyah.”

This hadith is batil (false) and its chain of transmission is saqit (wholly unreliable). It contains the following defects:

  • Abu Hatim says Muhammad ibn Ismail al Jafari is munkar al hadith (unacceptable in hadith). Abu Nuaim al Asbahani says he is matruk (suspected of forgery). Ibn Hibban says he narrates strange reports.[2]
  • Al ‘Uqayli says regarding Musa ibn Jafar al Jafari, “His hadith require investigation.”[3]
  • I could not trace Salih ibn Muawiyah, his brother, ‘Abdullah ibn Muawiyah, and their father.
