Hadith 40

I entered the presence of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and he said, “What will your state be when the sultan and the Qur’an quarrel?” We said, “How can that be?” He said, “When they say the Qur’an is makhluq (created). Allah is free from them and the righteous of the believers and I am free from them.” The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “And the ‘righteous of the believers’ is (in reference to) ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.”

Ibn ‘Asakir narrates — from al Hakim al Imam Abu ‘Abdullah al Hafiz — Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn ‘Ubaidullah ibn ‘Ali al ‘Alawi al Naqib narrated to us in Kufah — Abu al Hassan ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim al Harrar narrated to us — Muhammad ibn Abi al Sawdaʾ al Nahdi narrated to us — from Waki’ — from al A’mash — from Zaid ibn Wahb — from Hudhayfah…[1]

This hadith is munkar (unacceptable and contradicting authentic reports). I could not trace the narrators between al Hakim and Waki’.

Ibn Kathir writes:

Ibn Abi Hatim said — ‘Ali ibn al Hussain narrated to us — Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us — Muhammad ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al Hussain narrated to us — a reliable person narrated to me—and he elevated (the statement) to ‘Ali who said, “The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said regarding the verse ‘…and the righteous of the believers…’[2] ‘It is in reference to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.”[3]

The chain of transmission is da’if (weak) and the hadith is munkar jiddan (extremely weak and contradicting authentic reports).
