We were with the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam on a journey. He heard a crow cawing and said, “Do you know what he is saying?” We said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Verily he is saying, ‘In the First Book it is written, ‘Abu Bakr spoke the truth,’ in the Second Book, ‘‘Umar spoke the truth,’ in the Third Book, ‘‘Uthman Dhu al Nurayn spoke the truth,’ in the Fourth Book, ‘‘Ali al Hashimi spoke the truth.’” We said, “O Messenger of Allah! Can a crow speak?” He said, “Leave him, for he is relating from his Lord subhanahu wa ta ‘ala.”
Ibn al Najjar narrates this hadith — Abu Jafar Muhammad and Abu Bakr Lami’, the two sons of Ahmed ibn Muhammad al Saydalani, wrote to me — Yahya ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Mandah informed them — from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al Juzadani al Muqriʾ — Abu ‘Amr ‘Uthman ibn Ahmed ibn ‘Uthman ibn al Hussain ibn al Hassan al Baghdadi informed us, he came to us in Asbahan — Abu Bakr ibn al Hassan al Naqqash al Muqriʾ narrated to us — Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Khalid al Dhuhali narrated to us — Sarhab ibn Dahir al Rasibi narrated to us — Sa’id ibn Hubayrah al ‘Amiri narrated to us — Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us — from ‘Ataʾ ibn al Saʾib — from his father — from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr.[1]
Ibn al Najjar said, “This hadith is munkar (unacceptable). There is more than one majhul (unknown) narrator in the chain of transmission. Al Naqqash is notorious for narrating strange and unacceptable reports.”
Abu Hatim said regarding Sa’id ibn Hubayrah al ‘Amiri al Marwazi, “He is not strong (in hadith). He narrates hadith that the people of knowledge reject.”[2] In fact, Ibn Hibban accused him of lying.[3]
Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Khalid al Dhuhali and Sarhab ibn Dahir al Rasibi could not be traced.
Al Naqqash is accused of lying. Ibn al Najjar does not mention anything regarding the status of the narrator transmitting from him.
Al Suyuti and Ibn ‘Iraq mention this hadith in their respective works on fabrications.[4]

[2] Abu Hatim: al Jarh wa al Ta’dil, 4/70.
[3] Ibn Hibban: Kitab al Majruhin, 1/327.
