Hadith 19

“‘I do not want to see you after I am gone reverting to disbelievers, striking the necks of one another (i.e. killing one another). By Allah, if you do so, you will recognize me in the squadron that is striking you.” Then he turned around (or he said to ‘Ali; or he said to ‘Ali, three times). We saw Jibril nudge him and Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala immediately thereafter revealed the verse regarding ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib: ‘And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.’[1] (I.e. Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said the personal pronoun ‘you’ in the verse referred to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib). ‘Or whether [or not] We show you that which We have promised them, indeed, We are Perfect in Ability.’[2] And then the following verse was revealed: “Say, [O Muhammad], ‘My Lord, if You should show me that which they are promised, My Lord, then do not place me among the wrongdoing people.’”[3] And then the following verse was revealed: ‘So adhere to that which is revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path.’[4] And ‘Ali was a sign for the Hour: ‘And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people, and you [all] are going to be questioned.’[5] (This verse was revealed) regarding ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Ibn al Maghazili narrates — from Ismail ibn ‘Ali — ‘Ali ibn Musa al Rida narrated to us — my father, Musa narrated to us — my father, Jafar narrated to us — my father, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al Baqir narrated to us — from Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah al Ansari who said: ‘I was the closest to the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam on Hajjat al Wada’ (the Farewell Pilgrimage) until he said…’”[6]

This hadith is batil (false).

Al Dhahabi states: “Ismail ibn ‘Ali al Khuza’i is a teacher of Hilal al Haffar. Al Khatib says he is not a thiqah (reliable). I say (i.e. al Dhahabi) he is suspected of lying; he brings forth awabid (unusual reports).”[7]

As mentioned previously, Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak).

Ibn al Maghazili narrates — Ahmed ibn Muhammad informed us ijazatan (he authorized us to narrate this hadith) — ‘Umar ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Shawdhab informed us — Muhammad ibn al Hassan ibn Ziyad narrated to us — Yusuf ibn ‘Asim narrated to us — Ahmed ibn Subayh narrated to us — Yahya ibn Ya’la narrated to us — from ‘Umar ibn ‘Isa — from Jabir who said: ‘When the verse: ‘And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon the’[8] was revealed to the Messenger of Allah, he said: ‘(And whether [or not] We take) ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (i.e. Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said the personal pronoun ‘you’ in the verse referred to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib).’”[9]

As mentioned previously, Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak).

Ahmed ibn Muhammad is (Ahmed ibn Muhammad) ibn ‘Abdul Wahhab. He was unable to distinguish between who he transmitted from.

Muhammad ibn al Hassan ibn Ziyad and Yusuf ibn ‘Asim could not be traced.

He is da’if (weak).

If ‘Umar ibn ‘Isa is (‘Umar ibn ‘Isa) al Aslami, then he is matruk (suspected of forgery).

Therefore, the hadith is batil (false).

Al Daylami narrates from Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah: “’And whether [or not] We take you away [in death], indeed, We will take retribution upon them.’[10] was revealed regarding ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib and how he will enact revenge against al Nakithin and al Qasitin after me (i.e. after Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”[11]

I did not come across its chain of transmission.
