There will be a fitnah (strife) after me. When it occurs, keep to to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib; for he was the first person to see me and the first person to greet me on the Day of Resurrection. He is with me in the highest heaven. He is the faruq (differentiator) between truth and falsehood.
Ibn ‘Asakir narrates this hadith — Abu al Fath Yusuf ibn ‘Abdul Wahid informed us — Shuja’ informed us — Abu ‘Abdullah ibn Mandah informed us — Muhammad ibn Ya’qub informed us — Ibrahim ibn Sulaiman ibn ‘Ali al Himsi informed us — Ishaq ibn Bishr informed us — Khalid ibn al Harith informed us — from ‘Awf — from al Hassan — from Abu Layla al Ghifari who said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam say…”[1]
This hadith has been mentioned during the hadith of al Siddiq al Akbar[2]. It is mawdu’ (fabricated).
Al Suyuti mentions this hadith with another chain of transmission from Abu Ahmed al Hakim in al Kuna.[3]
The chain of transmission contains the narrator Ibrahim ibn Sulaiman al Khazzaz al Kufi. He is matruk (suspected of forgery).
In short, the hadith is mawdu’ (fabricated) in both of its chains of transmission.
[1] Ibn ‘Asakir: Tarikh Dimashq, 42/450.
[2] Hadith: 66, mawdu’ section.
[3] Al Suyuti: al Laʾali al Masnu’ah, 1/298.
