Hadith 112

The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was gifted a carpet known as Handaf. He said to me, “O Anas, open it.” So I opened it. Then he said, “Invite ten people.” So I invited them. When they entered, he ordered them to sit on the carpet. Thereafter, he called ‘Ali and whispered something to him for a long time. ‘Ali returned and sat on the carpet. Then he said, “O wind, carry us!” The wind lifted us. Suddenly, the carpet flew with us. Then he said, “O wind, place us down.” Then he said, “Do you know where you are?” They said, “No.” He said, “This is the place of the People of the Cave and Inscription (Ashab al Kahf wa al Raqim). Stand and greet your brothers.” We stood, one by one, and greeted them (i.e. we said al salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuh). But they did not respond to us. ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib stood and said, “Al salamu ‘alaykum, O community of Siddiqin (especially righteous) and martyrs.” They responded, “‘Alayka al salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuh.” I said, “What is with them, they responded to you but they did not respond to us?” ‘Ali said to them, “What is with you people, you do not respond to my brothers?” They said, “We, the community of Siddiqin and martyrs only speak to a prophet or a wasi after death.” The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “O wind, carry us.” The wind carried us, flying around. Then he said, “O wind, place us down.” Suddenly, we were in al Harrah. ‘Ali said, “We found the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in the last rak’ah (of salah). We travelled and traversed such a far distance and we came back. The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was reading in the last rak’ah (of salah), “Or have you thought that the companions of the cave and the inscription were, among Our signs, a wonder?”[1]

Ibn al Maghazili narrates this hadith — Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al Bayyi’ al Baghdadi informed us — Abu ‘Abdullah Ahmed ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Khalid al Katib — Abu Bakr Ahmed ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn Silm al Khatli — ‘Umar ibn Ahmed narrated to me — al Hassan ibn Yahya Abu al Rabi’ ibn al Jurjani narrated to us — ‘Abdul Razzaq ibn Hammam al San’ani narrated to us — Ma’mar narrated to us — from Aban — from Anas ibn Malik…[2]

This hadith is batil (false) and mawdu’ (fabricated). Perhaps this was actually a dream that some people turned into a hadith.

Aban is Ibn Abi ‘Ayyash. He is matruk (suspected of forgery). In fact, Shu’bah and Ahmed deemed him a kadhdhab (liar).

Ibn al Maghazili is da’if (weak).

I do not know who he is referring to when he says ‘Umar ibn Ahmed, there are a number of people with this name.
