Ibn Habib has recorded ‘Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Auf and Huwaytib ibn ‘Abdul ‘Uzza being the brother-in-law of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam through two marriages while Talhah ibn ‘Ubaidullah radiya Llahu ‘anhu is the brother-in-law of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam through three marriages. However, the correct view is that Talhah ibn ‘Ubaidullah radiya Llahu ‘anhu is in actual fact the brother-in-law of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam through four marriages, having married Ruqayyah bint Abi Umayyah, Hamnah bint Jahsh, Umm Kulthum bint Abi Bakr al Siddiq, and a daughter of Abu Sufyan; all of who were sisters of the Ummahat al Mu’minin—Umm Salamah, Zainab bint Jahsh, Aisha bint Abi Bakr, and Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan.
The mother of Sayyidah Maimunah radiya Llahu ‘anha, Hind bint ‘Auf ibn al Harith ibn Humatah ibn Jarsh, was indeed blessed with the most esteemed and noblest sons-in-law: Abu Bakr al Siddiq, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, Hamzah ibn ‘Abdul Muttalib, ‘Abbas ibn ‘Abdul Muttalib; the best of them being the honourable Master Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
[1] We have relied extensively on al Muhabbar of Ibn Habib and Nisa’ Rasul Allah wa Awladihi wa man Salafahu min Quraysh wa Hulafa’ihim wa Ghayrihim of ‘Abdul Mu’min al Dimyati; as well as others such as: Nssb Quraysh, Ansab al Ashraf, Jamharah Ansab al ‘Arab, Tabaqat al Kubra, al Isti’ab, al Isabah, and Siyar A’lam al Nubala’.
[2] It is also said that his name is ‘Abd ibn Bajad.
[3] Ibn Habib did not mention her but al Baladhuri did mention her (1/406). The researcher, Fahmi Sa’d erroneously thought that Ibn Habib mentioned her in his research on al Dimyati’s book (pg. 124).
[4] She bore him: Muslim, Ma’mar, Aisha, Maryam, and Umm Yahya.
[5] Ibn Habib says that was rather the daughter of Abu Rabi’ah ibn al Mughirah.
[6] It is said that her name was Umm Habibah, while others say that is her agnomen not her name.
[7] Al Dimyati says his name is Qais ibn al Muttalib ibn Asad ibn ‘Abdul ‘Uzza ibn Qusayy. Ibn Habib says his name is Uhayb ibn al Muttalib.
[8] Ibn Habib says that Huwaytib married her first and thereafter Safwan, whereas al Dimyati says she married Safwan first.
[9] He was killed in Ta’if while still on disbelief.
[10] She is the daughter of Harith ibn Huzn al Hilali.
[11] He was killed by the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam on the day of Uhud.
[12] This is his name according to Ibn Habib whereas al Dimyati says his name is Ziyad ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Malik ibn al Hazm ibn Ru’aybah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Hilal al ‘Amiri Buhayr al Hilali.
[13] His name has not been specified.
