Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O household … O Allah! My family is more deserving

‘Abdul Karim ibn Abi ‘Umair narrated to me saying―al Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us saying―Abu ‘Amr narrated to us saying―Shaddad Abu ‘Ammar narrated to me saying―I heard Wathilah ibn al Asqa’ radiya Llahu ‘anhu relating:

I asked about ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib at his house.

Fatimah said, “He went to Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to bring him.”

When he came, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam entered so I entered. Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam sat on the carpet. He seated Fatimah on his right, ‘Ali on his left, and Hassan and Hussain in front of him. He then placed a cloth over them and submitted:

Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet’s] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.[1]

O Allah, this is my family. O Allah, my family is more worthy.

Wathilah says, “I said from the corner of the room, ‘And am I from your household, O Rasulullah?’

He salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam confirmed, ‘You are from my household.’”

Wathilah comments, “It is for someone who aspires for what I aspired for.”[2]

The Rawafid cite this narration as proof. The narration is sahih. However, the hadith contains a great stumbling block for them. How can Sayyidina Wathilah ibn al Asqa’ radiya Llahu ‘anhu be included among the Ahlul Bayt whereas he has no family connection with Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam yet at the same time Sayyidah Khadijah radiya Llahu ‘anha is excluded whereas she is the wife of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and the mother of Fatimah? It behoves them to disregard this narration.

From Ibn Jarir―ibn Waki’ narrated to us―Abu Nuaim narrated to us―Yunus narrated to us from―Abu Ishaq―Abu Dawood informed us from―Abu al Hamra’ who relates:

I was stationed in Madinah for seven months during the lifetime of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. I noticed that when fajr time would set in, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam would come to the door of ‘Ali and Fatimah and say: Al Salah! Al Salah! Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet’s] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.

Ibn Kathir comments, “Abu Dawood al Ama is Nafi’ ibn al Harith, the kadhab.”

This narration poses yet another obstacle for the Shia. How is it possible for Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to remind the infallible about salah? Was he afraid that they would miss salah? This fear denies their infallibility. It is mandatory on the infallible not to forget about salah and prepare for the same without a reminder.

It appears in another narration that he would say:

Salah, O household![3]

The problem with this narration is ‘Ali ibn Zaid ibn Jud’an who is da’if.

‘Ali ibn Zaid ibn Jud’an

  • Hammad ibn Zaid says, “He would turn asanid upside down.”
  • Ibn Khuziamah says, “I do not use him as proof due to his weak memory.”
  • Ibn ‘Uyainah classified him as da’i
  • Ibn Ma’in remarks, “He is worthless.”
  • Yahya al Qattan comments, “He ahadith should be avoided.”
  • Ahmed ibn Hambal declared him da’i
