Ahadith Relating to the Sahabah
The Sahabi, ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud radiya Llahu ‘anhu reported that Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:
خير الناس قرني ، ثم الذين يلونهم
The best of generations is the one in which I was sent, then that which follows, then that which follows.[1]
Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is also reported to have said:
لا تسبوا أصحابي ، فوالذي نفسي بيده لو أنفق أحدكم مثل أُحد ذهباً ما بلغ مدّ أحدهم ولانصيفة
Do not curse my Sahabah, for by Him Who controls my life, if any of you were to spend the weight of Mount Uhud in gold, it still would not equal a mudd[2] of one of them nor even one-half of it.[3]
Al Sayed Abu Bakr Shihab al Din al ‘Alawi al Hadrami writes:
Reverence, love, and veneration of the Sahabah radiya Llahu ‘anhum is incumbent upon all believers, especially the members of the Nabi’s salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam Ahlul Bayt. Not only were they Ahl al Riwayah wa al Dirayah (people of transmission and knowledge), they were beacons of guidance and the epitomes of humanity — after the ambiya’. Allah Ta’ala Himself praises them in His book and there are also numerous authentic reports that speak to their virtue. Any fair-minded person would acknowledge their high-rank and status from the following ahadith:
Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is reported to have said:
الله الله في أصحابي لا تتخذوهم غرضاً بعدي ، فمن أحبهم فبحبي أحبهم ومن أبغضهم فببغضي أبغضهم ، ومن آذاهم فقد آذاني ومن آذاني فقد آذى الله ، ومن آذى الله يوشك أن يأخذه
(Fear) Allah, (fear) Allah with regards to my Sahabah! Do not make them the target (of your criticism and abuse) after me. He who loves them, loves them because he loves me, and he who hates them, hates them because he hates me. He who harms them has indeed harmed me, and he who harms me it is as if he has attempted to harm Allah, and he who attempts to harm Allah will soon be taken to task by Him.[4]
Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam is also reported to have said:
إن الله اختار أصحابي على العالمين سوى النبيين والمرسلين
Allah selected my Sahabah over everyone else save the ambiya’ and rusul.[5]
