19. The perfection of ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu conviction testified to by the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and best exemplified by his contentedness and forbearance in buying and selling

  1. Muwaffaq ibn Sa’id narrated to us—Abu ‘Ali Al Saffar narrated to us—Abu Sa’id al Nasrawi narrated to us—Ibn Ziyad al Simmidhi narrated to us—Ibn Shirawayh and Ahmed ibn Ibrahim narrated to us—Ishaq al Hanzali narrated to us—Shababah ibn Sawwar al Mada’ini narrated to us—Hisham, who is [ibn][1] al Ghaz ibn Abi Rabi’ah al Jurashi, narrated to us—from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Hussain:

‘Uthman bought an orchard from a man[2] and he chaffered over the price with him.

The man said, “Give me ten thousand.”

‘Uthman then turned to ‘Abdul Rahman ibn ‘Auf and said, “I heard the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam [saying][3], “Allah will grant one who is a forbearing seller and buyer, and a forbearing Judge or plaintiff entry into paradise.”

He turned to the man and said, “I will give you an extra ten thousand, in compliance with the statement I heard from the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”[4]

[1] The original contained the word Ibn.

[2] The original contained the words from a man.

[3] Perhaps this was erroneously omitted in the original, I have added it so that the sentence is complete.

[4] The isnad is Da’if. Ishaq ibn Rahuyah narrates it in his Al Matalib al Aliyah (4/106) from Shabbabah ibn Sawwar. Ibn Hajar sates, “This is a sound Mursal; it is supported by the narration that comes after it.” He then reprots the narration of Ishaq—from Muhammad ibn Bakr al Bursani—from Hisham ibn Hassan—from Matar al Warraq, and said, “This Hassan Mursal report supports the one before it; in fact they support each other due to different narrators narrating each of the narrations. In addition to this, it has a third alternate chain of transmission.” I say: The first is narrated by ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Hussain who is a Junior Tabi’i. The second is narrated by Matar al Warraq who is from the Taba’ al Tabi’in, and is considered weak. This collaboration does not elevate its status of it being weak. The third chain has Salim al Khayyat who is extremely weak. Yahya said, “He is not worth a penny.” Tahdhib al Tahdhib (1/678).
