It is recorded under this theme that Sayyidina ‘Ali encouraged Sayyidina ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma to observe perfect taqwa and directed him to emulate the previous khalifah. This incident is recorded in the beginning of the famous and celebrated book of the Hanafi ‘Ulama’ Kitab al Kharaj of Imam Abu Yusuf. Kanz al ‘Ummal references it to al Baihaqi on the authority of Yahya ibn ‘Aqil from Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu:
قال أبو يوسف سمعت أبا حنيفة رحمه الله تعالى يقول قال علي لعمر رضي الله عنهما حين استخلف إن أردت أن تلحق صاحبيك فارقع القميص و نكس الإزار و اخصف النعل و ارقع الخف و قصر الأمل و كل دون الشبع
Abu Yusuf said: I heard Abu Hanifah rahimahu Llah saying:
‘Ali told ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma when the latter was appointed as khalifah, “If you wish to join your two companions, then patch your throbe, keep your lower garment above your ankles, and patch your socks and shoes. Have less hopes (of the world) and do not eat to your fill.”[1]
Firstly, it is established that Sayyidina ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu confirmed that Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu abandoned the world and was muttaqi (righteous and religious).
Secondly, according to him, the first khalifah is worth emulating.
Thirdly, Sayyidina ‘Ali awarded Sayyidina ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhuma with these inspiring words which is a glaring sign of their harmonious relationship.
