The Virtues of Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu Deduced From These Verses

  1. When the kuffar of Makkah agreed to kill Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala informed Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and permitted him to migrate, Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam took Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu as a companion with the command of Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala. Thus, if in the sight of Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala, Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu was not true in his iman and strong in his Islam and was not an ardent lover of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam from his heart and soul, Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala would have never permitted him to accompany Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in such a sensitive time. If Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam did not have full conviction on his love, he would never have taken Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu with him on this journey.
  2. If Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu was not prepared and happy to sacrifice his life and wealth for Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, he would not have accompanied Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at such an arduous time and would not have put his life at risk. In fact, he would have fabricated excuses to rescue himself from joining Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam in such a difficult time.
  3. From the time they left home until they reached Madinah, the kind and gentle words spoken by Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu, the manner he protected Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and the way he fulfilled the responsibility of accompanying Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam all show that he had deep rooted love for Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and had no concern for his own life and honour when it came to defending Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
  4. None of the other Sahabah radiya Llahu ‘anhum were on that level that Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam could take as a companion on this journey and a friend in the cave besides Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu. This proves the superiority of Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu over all the other Sahabah radiya Llahu ‘anhum.
  5. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala loved this service of Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu so much that He boasted about his friendship and loyalty in this verse to encourage others who would listen to it and prepare themselves to accompany Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. If the friendship of Sayyidina Abu Bakr al Siddiq radiya Llahu ‘anhu was not accepted by Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala and his service and companionship was not of a lofty level, then why was he mentioned as an example and why was his friendship and assistance described to motivate others?
  6. By declaring “ثَانِیَ اثْنَیْنِ” (as one of two), Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala made it clear that Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu is second after Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to discharge religious responsibilities.
  7. By stating “لِصَاحِبِه” (his companion), Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala has verified the lofty companionship of Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu which none besides him attained. Hence, denying the companionship of Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu is in fact belying the Qur’an.
  8. The words “لَا تَحْزَنْ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ مَعَنَا” (Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us) show that Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam comforted Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu that just as Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala is the protector and helper of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, He is the helper and protector of his companion as well. When it is confirmed by this verse that Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala was with Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu, then his piety and righteousness is also confirmed, since Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala says in another verse:

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ مَعَ الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا وَّالَّذِیْنَ هُمْ مُّحْسِنُوْنَ

Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.[1]

9. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala sent His tranquillity upon Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu. And Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala only sends His tranquillity upon those who have true iman and strong Islam and upon whom is Allah’s subhanahu wa ta ‘ala grace. Proof for this tranquillity is

فَاَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ سَکِیْنَتَهعَلَیْهِ

And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him.

10. By pondering over these verses, the lofty status of Sayyidina Abu Bakr al Siddiq radiya Llahu ‘anhu is learnt because these verses were revealed to inspire and warn those who were lax in going for jihad. Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala explained to these persons, warned them and declared His independence. Firstly, Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala explained to them by exposing the insignificance of this world followed by warning them of the descent of punishment and replacing them with another nation. At the end, Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala mentions His independence and His Rasul’s disinterest. To substantiate this independence and disinterest, the example of Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu was presented coupled with mention of his loyalty and love. Accordingly, the level of his truthfulness, friendship and companionship can be gaged from the appreciation of his help and friendship by Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala and His Rasul salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam that Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala is boasting about it to inspire and warn others.

I have briefly listed the virtues and merits of Sayyidina Abu Bakr radiya Llahu ‘anhu deduced from these verses. I will now enumerate the objections of the Shia coupled with their answers. Their objections are so ridiculous and silly; to refute them is like presenting proofs to dispute with the person who denies the rising of the sun in broad daylight. Nonetheless, we are forced to answer in compliance to the statement of the seal of the muhaddithin:

چوں بناۓ کلام بر اصول گروہے نہادہ است نا چارزمام اختیار بدست آنہا دادہ ہر جاکہ کشیدہ برند میر و دو بہر رنگ کہ رنگیں کںد می شود

Since the foundation of this arguments rest on the principles of one sect, thus the reigns are in their hands; they may pull wherever they desire and colour in whichever colour they wish.

Nevertheless, we hope that people with sound disposition will have a fair look at those objections and consider the doggedness and stubbornness of the Shia scholars and mujtahidin whose hearts have been veiled and whose minds have been cloaked with such deep rooted enmity that they deny such categorical statements and present fallacious interpretations to substantiate their denial of the virtue of the most virtuous Sahabi radiya Llahu ‘anhu.

و ها انا اشرع فى بيان هفواتهم

I begin now listing their drivel.
