The Virtues and Signs of the Tabi’in of the Sahabah

In this supplication, just as Sayyidina Zayn al ‘Abidin rahimahu Llah sent salutations upon the Sahabah of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, he supplicated for mercy for the Tabi’in. These are the words of the Imam:

O Allah! Reward those abundantly who followed them in a beautiful way. Those who supplicate, “O our Rabb! Forgive us and our brothers that have surpassed us with faith.” Those who followed their path, trailed their direction and walked in their footsteps. Those who had no doubt in their foresightedness and did not hesitate in emulating their ways and following their guided lamps, protecting and supporting them. Those who followed their din and guidance, concurred with them and did not criticise them in what they delivered to them.

It is clear from these words that the Tabi’in enjoy the highest rank and are superior to the rest of the ummah after the Sahabah radiya Llahu ‘anhum and their signs have been listed by the Imam rahimahu Llah. Accordingly, not a slight doubt remains that the group of the ummah of Muhammad salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam who followed the Sahabah radiya Llahu ‘anhum is superior and only that group is on the original path of iman who followed in the Sahabah’s radiya Llahu ‘anhum footsteps. Now we have to find out as to who were those persons who followed their footsteps. Are they the Ahlus Sunnah or the Shia? This can be concluded by looking at the beliefs of both these sects. The Sunni beliefs concur to what the Imam rahimahu Llah has said in his supplication that they are the followers of the Sahabah radiya Llahu ‘anhum and they would supplicate for their goodness and pray that mercy descends on them understanding them to be the forerunners and predecessors. They would follow their ways and looked up to them with high esteem. The Shia beliefs are in stark conflict to this. They believe the Sahabah radiya Llahu ‘anhum to be evil and criticise them and exempt themselves from them. They label them as disbelievers and hypocrites. They regard following them as kufr. They doubt their good qualities and slander them in every possible way. In short, it is incumbent upon the one who possesses iman and intelligence to study the words of the Imam’s rahimahu Llah supplication and then have a look at the beliefs of the Ahlus Sunnah and Shia and then judge whether the Ahlus Sunnah are upon the truth or the Shia in accordance to the Imam’s statement.
