Sa’d radiya Llahu ‘anhu also narrated many Ahadith which have the praise of ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu. If he did not have love for him, he would not have narrated it.
It is reported in Sahih Muslim from Sa’d radiya Llahu ‘anhu:
خلف رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم علي بن أبي طالب في غزوة تبوك فقال: يا رسول الله تخلفني في النساء والصبيان؟ فقال: أما ترضى أن تكون مني بمنزلة هارون من موسى؟ غير أنه لا نبي بعدي.
The Rasul of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam appointed ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu to stay behind in his place during the Battle of Tabuk.
So ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhu asked, “O Rasul of Allah, are you leaving me behind with the women and children?”
The Rasul of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam replied, “Do you not wish to enjoy the same relationship with me which Harun ‘alayh al Salam enjoyed with Musa ‘alayh al Salam? The only difference between us is that there is no Nabi after me.”[1]
His praise for Ibn ‘Abbas has also been recorded in Tabaqat al Kubra of Ibn Sa’d:
عن سعد بن أبي وقاص رضي الله عنه قال ما رأيت أحدا أحضر فهما ولا ألب لبا ولا أكثر علما ولا أوسع حلما من ابن عباس ولقد رأيت عمر يدعوه للمعضلات ثم يقول عندك قد جاءت معضله ثم لا يجاوز قوله وأن حوله لأهل بدر من المهاجرين والأنصار.
It is reported from Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas radiya Llahu ‘anhu that he said, “I have not seen anyone who is more understanding, more intelligent, more knowledgeable, and more tolerant than Ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhu. Once I saw ‘Umar calling him to solve the difficult matters he was faced with.
He said, ‘This difficult situation has been handed over to you to solve.’
‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhu would not disregard the opinion of Ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhu. ‘Umar radiya Llahu ‘anhu chose Ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhu for this despite having all the Muhajirin and Ansar that participated in Badr around him.”[2]
