The praise of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al ‘As radiya Llahu ‘anhuma

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al ‘As radiya Llahu ‘anhuma also praised Hussain ibn ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhuma as is narrated by Rajaʾ ibn Rabi’ah:

I was in the Masjid of the Rasul of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam when Hussain ibn ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhuma passed by. Hussain radiya Llahu ‘anhu greeted and all the people replied. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr remained silent and when everyone had quietened down ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr raised his voice and replied to the greeting. Then he turned to the people and said, “Do you not wish that I inform you who is the most beloved of the people to Allah?”

The people replied, “Yes, please do.”

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr said, “It is this person who has passed. By Allah, I have not spoken to him nor has he spoken to me since the Day of Siffin[1] and by Allah, it will bring more joy to me that he reconciles with me than owning the like of the Mountain of Uhud (in gold).”

Abu Sa’id radiya Llahu ‘anhu asked him, “Why don’t you go and meet him?”

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr replied, “Yes, we may.”

They arranged a time to go and meet him and I joined them. Abu Sa’id sought permission to enter and he was granted permission. Thereafter he sought permission on behalf of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr and continued seeking permission until Hussain granted permission. When Abu Sa’id saw ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, he moved away to make space for ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr as he had been sitting next to Hussain radiya Llahu ‘anhu. Hussain radiya Llahu ‘anhu pulled Abu Sa’id next to him again. So ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr remained standing. When Hussain radiya Llahu ‘anhu saw this, he left Abu Sa’id and made space for ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr proceeded to sit between them. Abu Sa’id radiya Llahu ‘anhu informed him of the events that led to them coming to meeting him.

Hussain radiya Llahu ‘anhu asked, “Is this the case, O Abu ‘Amr? Do you know that I am the most beloved of all people to Allah?”

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr radiya Llahu ‘anhuma replied, “Yes, By Allah, I do know that you are the most beloved of all people to Allah.”

Hussain asked, “Then why did you fight against me and my father on the Day of Siffin? By Allah, My father was better than me.”

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr replied, “Yes, but once ‘Amr radiya Llahu ‘anhu complained about me to the Rasul of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying, ‘‘Abdullah fasts during the day and stands in prayer during the night.’ So, the Rasul of Allah told me, ‘Pray during the night but take adequate rest too and fast during the day but take a break occasionally and be obedient to ‘Amr radiya Llahu ‘anhu.’ When the Day of Siffin dawned upon us, he took an oath and forced me but I swear by Allah I did not join them nor did I draw a sword for them or strike with a spear or shoot an arrow.”

Hussain radiya Llahu ‘anhu asked, “Don’t you know that there is no obedience to the creation in the disobedience of the creator?”

‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr replied, “Yes, that is correct.”

Abu Sa’id said, “It seemed like Hussain radiya Llahu ‘anhu accepted the apology from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr.”[2]

[2] Majma’ al Zawa’id, vol. 9 pg. 299. #15109 Al Haythami said, “Al Tabrani has narrated it in al Awsat. ‘Ali ibn Sa’id ibn Bashir is one of the narrators who was a little lenient but he was a Hafiz. All of the other narrators are sound.” Al Bazzar has also narrated it as al Haythami stated in Majma’ al Zawa’id vol. 9 pg. 281 from Hassan ibn ‘Ali radiya Llahu ‘anhuma. Al Haythami commented, “The narrators are Sahih besides Hashim ibn Barid as he is at a lower level, i.e. Thiqah (reliable).” The confusion between Hassan and Hussain happens a lot because they both enjoy the same virtues and traits and they both are worthy of those virtues and traits.
