Some Significant Locations and their Governors

Under the previous heading, a few departments and offices were listed. It is appropriate to now enumerate the governors of few significant locations. The governors of these areas assumed the responsibility of the present day deputy commissioner or provincial minister. He was in charge of all the administrative affairs and management of that area.

These details will reveal the reality of the Umayyad and non-Umayyad governors and it will uncover the exact amount of individuals of the Banu Umayyah Sayyidina ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu appointed as governors and how many from other tribes were appointed.

 

Makkah Mukarramah

During the Caliphate of ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu, the following personalities assumed the governor post at different times[1]:

  1. Sayyidina Khalid ibn al ‘As ibn Hisham al Makhzumi radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi).[2]
  2. Sayyidina ‘Ali ibn ‘Adi ibn Rabi’ah radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi).[3]
  3. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr al Hadrami.[4]
  4. ‘Abdullah ibn al Harith ibn Nawfal al Muttalibi al Hashimi, Abu Muhammad (Title: Babbah).[5]

 

Madinah al Munawwarah

  1. When Sayyidina ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu would travel for Hajj during his Caliphate, he would appoint Sayyidina Zaid ibn Thabit al Ansari radiya Llahu ‘anhu as his deputy over Madinah Munawwarah.[6]

 

Al Ta’if

  1. Qasim ibn Rabi’ah al Thaqafi was the governor over Ta’if throughout the reign of Sayyidina ‘Uthman radiya Llahu ‘anhu.[7]

 

Al San’a’ (Yemen)

  1. Sayyidina Ya’la ibn Munyah al Tamimi radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi), also known as Ya’la ibn Umayyah.[8]

 

Al Jund (Yemen)

  1. Sayyidina ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi’ah al Makhzumi radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi).[9]

 

Azerbaijan

  1. Sayyidina Ash’ath ibn Qais al Kindi radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi).[10]

 

Halawan

  1. ‘Utaybah ibn al Nahhas.[11]

 

Hamdhan

  1. Nusayr.[12]

Hafiz Ibn Kathir has written in al Bidayah while discussing Sayyidina Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah al Bajali radiya Llahu ‘anhu:

 

قد كان (جرير) عاملا لعثمان على همذان

Jarir was governor for ‘Uthman over Hamdhan [for a certain period].[13]

 

The famous shia historian al Yaqubi has corroborated this in his Tarikh al Yaqubi.[14]

  1. Sayyidina Sa’ib ibn al Aqra’ radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi).[15]

 

Jurjan

  1. Dhu al Jawshan al Dababi.[16]

 

Masbadhan

  1. Hubaysh.[17]

 

Qarqaisa’

  1. Sayyidina Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi), for a period.[18]

 

Mah

  1. Malik ibn Habib.[19]

 

Al Rayy

  1. Sa’id ibn Qais.[20]

 

Qawmas

  1. Jabalah ibn Hayat al Kinani.[21]

 

Al Mawsil

  1. Hakim ibn Salamah.[22]

 

San’a’ (Yemen)

  1. Sayyidina Thumamah ibn ‘Adi radiya Llahu ‘anhu (Sahabi).

 

كان (ثمامة) أميرا لعثمان على صنعاء

Thumamah was ‘Uthman’s governor over San’a’.[23]
