Sayyidah Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan

Name and lineage

Umm Habibah Ramlah bint Abi Sufyan Sakhr ibn Harb ibn Umayyah ibn ‘Abd Shams al Umawiyyah. Her mother was Safiyyah bint Abi al ‘As ibn Umayyah.

Sayyidah Umm Habibah radiya Llahu ‘anha was born seventeen years before the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam received Nubuwwah. She accepted Islam with her husband, ‘Ubaidullah ibn Jahsh al Asadi. They both emigrated to Abyssinia, where she gave birth to a daughter named Habibah. ‘Ubaidullah passed away in Abyssinia. From his wives, she was the most closely related to him in lineage; her lineage linked up to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam at ‘Abd Manaf. She passed away in 44 AH.

Merits and Status

1. Umm Habibah radiya Llahu ‘anha honoured the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam by not allowing her father, who was an idolator at the time, to sit upon his bedding, when he came to extend the truce between the Muslims and the Quraysh.

2. She participated in the second emigration to Abyssinia.[1]

[1]  The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam praised those who emigrated to Abyssinia and then later to Madinah, saying that for them is the reward of two emigrations. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2502.)
