Sayyidah Maimunah bint al Harith
Name and lineage
Maimunah bint al Harith ibn Hazn [ibn Bujayr ibn al Huzam ibn Ruwaybah ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Hilal ibn] ‘Amir ibn Sa’sa’ah al Hilaliyyah. Her mother was Hind bint ‘Awf. She married Mas’ud ibn ‘Amr al Thaqafi, who separated from her. She then married Abu Ruhm ibn ‘Abdul ‘Uzza but he passed away shortly thereafter. Al ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhu[1]—her representative—married her to the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam consummated the marriage at Sarif, near Makkah. She was the last woman whom the Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam married. This marriage took place in the year 7 AH, during the ‘Umrat al Qada’ journey.
Merits and Status
1. The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam testified to her iman. Ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhuma reports:
قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الأخوات مؤمنات ميمونة زوج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وأختها أم الفضل بنت الحارث وأختها سلمى بنت الحارث امرأة حمزة وأسماء بنت عميس أختهن لأمهن
The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “The sisters who are believers are: Maimunah—the wife of the Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, her sister Umm al Fadl bint al Harith, her sister Salma bint al Harith—the wife of Hamzah, and Asma’ bint ‘Umays—their uterine sister.”[2]
2. The Prophet salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam named her Maimunah. Al Hakim reports with his chain from Ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhuma:
كان اسم خالتي ميمونة برة فسماها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ميمونة
The name of my aunt, Maimunah, was Barrah. The Messenger of Allah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam named her Maimunah.[3]

[1] Al ‘Abbas ibn ‘Abdul Muttalib radiya Llahu ‘anhu is the husband of her sister, Umm al Fadl bint al Harith radiya Llahu ‘anhu. Accordingly, Sayyidah Maimunah radiya Llahu ‘anha is the maternal aunt of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas radiya Llahu ‘anhuma.
